Result: Mawdesley won by 10 wickets
New Victoria suffered a heavy defeat on Saturday to condemn them to probable relegation. Hosting league winners Mawdesley the newly crowned champions were in no mood to be charitable as they responded to being asked to bowl by dismissing the visitors for a paltry 54. Mawdesley had no difficulty in knocking off the target without the loss of a single wicket. Although victory was always likely to be difficult for the hosts, they would have been hoping to secure some bonus points to evade bottom placed Dalton. Unfortunately, a combination of good bowling and questionable shot selections saw New Victoria slump to a disappointing defeat. On reflection their destiny cannot be attributed to the result of this game, as they have failed to beat rival relegation teams throughout the season in crucial matches, and must now face the prospect of plying their trade in the second division next year.

NEW VIC HAVE ONE LAST CHANCE
New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 know that only a win against league champions Mawdesley will give them any chance of avoiding relegation from Division 1. Last Saturday the 1st X1 travelled to Darwen but unfortunately the square was underwater. Mawdesley did New Vic a favour by thrashing Newburgh who only picked up 2 points. Newburgh need 5 points against 3rd placed Rufford to guarantee survival.
Last weekend New Victoria 2nd X1 sadly ended their season in defeat at the hands of high flying Bretherton. After being put in to bat, New Vic got off to a very slow start with the only run in the opening 8 overs coming from a wide. After the dismissal of opener Wilson this brought Jordan Hall to the crease, the young man showed great maturity on a difficult wicket and finished agonisingly close to his half century only to fall on 46. Martin Doran (23) also showed the stability we have all come to expect but a lower order collapse meant New Vic were bowled out for 103.
Despite posting a below par total New Vic took to the field in their usual confident mood. A good early spell from Martin Doran (2-29) meant that New Vic were in with a shout, however Jamie Ashton had other ideas smashing the ball to all parts in a fantastic 59 before being dismissed by Craig Williams (1-21) courtesy of a good catch from Richard 'Baywatch' Wilson.
Ste Saunderson (1-9) also continued his wicket taking form with a somewhat lucky dismissal after the ball bounced off the batsman's helmet and onto the stumps. New Vic were eventually defeated by 5 wickets, but can take a lot of confidence from their late season form as they look to 2010 and with a lot of talented juniors New Vic will be hoping to recruit more experience to the side to push themselves closer to promotion.

NEW VIC BATTING LETS THEM DOWN
Last Saturday New Victoria 1st X1 lost to Hesketh Bank by 48 runs despite an excellent bowling performance. On a damp track at Station Road Hesketh Bank were put into bat and lost a couple of early wickets. Barry Mills (1-28) and Chris Hames (4-39) took the early and despite J.Edwards (29) New Vic were on top. Nelson (19) came in to keep Edwards company. Edwards was dismissed by a forward diving catch by Curtis Rigby. Wickets kept falling and the dangerous Bannister (13) was brilliant caught and bowled by Martin Howard (3-34). LeMarinel (16) got going before being caught on the boundary by Curtis Rigby and tight bowling from Jonathan Howard (1-9) meant that Hesketh Bank were all out for 115.
With lots of time available to win the game New Vic were confident. Despite runs from Andy Schofield (25*), Barry Mills (10) and Martin Howard (10) the away side got no where near the required total with Bannister (3-29), Kirk (3-23) and Nelson (3-1) taking the wickets. In the end New Vic were all out for 67 leaving them 48 runs. With two matches left for the 1st X1 the Crossens based side need to win at least one match and hope that Newburgh don't get very many points. This week the 1st X1 travel to Darwen and the 2nd X1 welcome Bretherton to Rufford Road.

NEW VIC SLIPPING TOWARDS RELEGATION
A defeat at Aughton last weekend by 5 wickets has meant New Victoria need at least two wins from the last 3 games, if relegation is to be avoided. In 2007 the league didn't have a club to promote but this time might be different. With 18 points between New Victoria and safety winning is a must. This Saturday the 1st X1 travel to Hesketh Bank.
Last Saturday New Victoria travelled to Aughton and found the usual slow outfield which makes scoring difficult. New Vic scored slow early on but didn't lose many wickets. Sean Cragg (14) stayed in for a long time on a hard track but slow outfield. The introduction of slow bowler Hughes (6-21) blew away the middle order. The 10th wicket partnership between Owen Jamieson (22*) and Jonny Howard (13) meant that New Vic gained 2 batting points before being all out for 95. In reply Aughton started well with P.Nolan (21) and M.Tenwick (32) riding their luck at times but scoring runs all the same. A number of drop catches cost New Vic as A.Barnes (26*) took Aughton to victory by 5 wickets. Barry Mills (3-25) carried on his good form with the ball passing the edge so many times. New Victoria picked up 4 points but this might not be enough to keep the Crossens based club in the 1st division.
Back at Rufford Road the 2nds were playing top of the table Winstanley Park. Runs from Jordan Hall (48) and Matty Howard (15) frustrated the league leaders for a while but New Vic were eventually all out for 112. In reply Winstanley Park started well with I.McAuley (46) before Colin Fenny (3-33) took away the top order. Stand in captain Ste Saunderson (1-25) got in on the act with an LBW before A.Whittaker (26*) took the Wigan based side to victory by 6 wickets. This Saturday the 2nds welcome Halsall West End to Rufford Road.

RAIN PREVENTS NEW VIC VICTORY
New Victoria 1st X1 travelled to Halsall West End last Saturday and came close to winning the game despite the rain delays. After morning rain the thought was that the game wouldn't go ahead, but the rain suddenly stopped and the game started only 10 minutes late. New Vic were put into bat and struggled early on with Ben Davies (3-31) looking in good form. After a couple of rain delays the middle order made up for the slow start with Dale Johnson (62) playing a controlled innings. Barry Mills (18) partnered him well as New Victoria declared on 151 for 8. In the end that left Halsall West End 22 overs to bat, the big question was would they try and win the game. The New Vic bowling didn't allow them too with Sean Cragg (1-24) having opener Marsland bowled in the 2nd over. Barry Mills (4-33) took away the rest of the top order after Teja (33) and Galloway (29) had put on a handy partnership. Then the slow bowlers took over with Martin Howard (2-19) and Andy Addison (1-1) taking further wickets. After a diving catch from wicket keeper Matty Simpson it looked like New Vic might clinch victory. Unfortunately the overs ran out with Halsall West End 80 for 8 and the game ended as a draw. This Saturday the 1st X1 travel to Aughton.
Back at Rufford Road the second XI produced a fantastic comeback to defeat a defiant Chorley side. Skipper Keith Pacey lost the toss and New Vic were put into bat. With the first innings being severely rain hit Pacey decided to declared on 109-7 with the bulk of the runs coming from the reliable Martin Doran (45*). In the field New Vic got off to a poor start, with Chorley strolling to 38 for 0 Colin Fenny (2-25) will feel aggrieved not to have better figures after having the openers put down in a strong opening spell. With New Vic down to 10 men following the departure of captain Pacey a victory looked unlikely, however Craig Williams (3-24) had other ideas. Williams bowled quickly and accurately in a fantastic 7 over spell and was unlucky not to have more wickets after a poor LBW decision when no shot was offered. Matty Howard got involved in two dismissals, catching the opener off the bowling of Williams and running out the number 3 batsmen. Stand in skipper Ste Saunderson (2-2) introduced himself into the attack and immediately got the breakthrough trapping the Chorley captain LBW. With 1 over left Chorley looked destined to have achieved a draw with the score on 74-8, but the confident Martin Doran produced a fantastic last over, with Wright and Hawksworth both taking fantastic catches while fielding close in. New Vic eventually ended a fantastic game in victory by 35 runs. Next week New Vic welcome high flyers Winstanley Park to Rufford Road with a view to continuing their fantastic late season form

New Victoria 1st X1 continued to show signs of improvement as they almost defeated bottom of the table and relegation rivals Dalton away. It was a crucial match which New Vic could not afford to lose and having lost the toss the visitors were asked to bat. New Vic started hesitantly as Schofield and Cragg were removed early on, but that brought the in-form Martin Howard to the crease to join the returning Graham Sweeny at the crease. The two batted patiently and weathered the storm as they set a foundation for the rest of the innings. After 30 overs they were 65-2, but Howard let loose to smash the ball to all corners of the ground on his way to an impressive 65. At the other end Sweeney continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over as he reached a patient 43 not out. Once Howard departed Sawbridge joined the party and hit a quick fire 39 not out, which allowed New Vic to declare on 176-3 after 45 overs.
In return it was clear Dalton were never intending to go for the win, especially after Barry Mills had removed five of the top six batsmen with some aggressive and accurate bowling. Paul Hames picked up a wicket and the score was 30-6 at one stage before a seventh wicket parnership looked to have saved Dalton. Howard's day got even better when he came on to dismiss the opener after keeper Dale Johnson rolled back the years with a superb stumping. Mills then took another wicket to finish with figures of 6-43 but Dalton's usual opener strode in at number 10 to see off the final four overs and prevent New Vic completing a much deserved victory. The draw saw New Vic finish with 14 valuable points, whilst Dalton registered 3, but there is still a lot of work to do before the season ends. This Saturday the 1st X1 travel to Halsall West End.
At Rufford Road New Victoria 2nd XI produced an excellent display to brush aside Chorley St James. Batting first New Vic got off to a slow start, but this soon changed when Mamzy Rahman (22) began to increase the run rate. Another crucial innings by Andy Addison (66) left New Vic in a great position. Skipper Keith Pacey (52) played his way back into form with the bat which left no pressure on Jordan Hall (21*) who scored runs quickly and New Vic were able to declare on 182 for 5 dec. In the field New Vic got off to a fantastic start as Craig Williams (3-14) ripped through the top order to leave the Chorley side reeling. Keith Pacey (3-18) bowled well from the other end as a big win looked on the cards. Andy Sheil (3-11) was too quick for the tail enders and New Vic eventually bowling Chorley out for 48 to collect the 20 points. Next week see's a repeat fixture as New Vic seek another 20 points as they again welcome Chorley to Rufford Road.

1st X1 won by 75 runs
2nd X1 - 203-9 - Graham Sweeney (79), Andy Sheil (28*)

2nd X1 won by 64 runs
New Victoria 1sts secured a crucial victory at home to Newburgh on Saturday after being put into bat on a bowler friendly wicket. The hosts started slowly and lost early wickets before Martin Howard (19) and Dale Johnson (12) steadied the ship. A flurry of quick wickets reduced New Vic to 62-8 and before a swashbuckling yet patient 60 partnership between Paul Hames (44) and Matty Simpson (23) and late support from Johnny Howard saw New Vic eventually bowled out for 139.
The balance of power had shifted in New Vic's favour and Newburgh never really looked intent on pushing for the victory, especially after Barry Mills (2-12) had removed both openers early on. Paul Hames (1-9) picked up another wicket before the introduction of Joe Sawbridge (3-26) and the excellent Sean Cragg (4-8) blew away the Newburgh line-up. Cragg bowled with speed and accuracy and the stand-in wicket keeper Dale Johnson performed admirably taking two catches including a diving leg side catch.
The win was important as New Victoria look to secure further points in the coming weeks to ensure their position in Division 1. A combination of the 1st X1 winning and Dalton being bowled out for 18 means that they are no longer bottom of the table. The aim will now be to overtake Newburgh who current sit outside the relegation places.
Last Saturday New Vic 2nd X1 also tasted victory this time away at Tarleton. The Crossens based side started well with the bat with Graham Sweeney (79) and Andy Addison (21) putting on a partnership of 82. Alex Rigby (16) and Keith Pacey (17) kept Sweeney company before he was out LBW. A middle order collapse then occurred with A.Eminson (4-59) and K.Palmer (3-81) taking the wickets. Late order runs from Andy Sheil (28*) meant that New Victoria finished on 203 for 9.
Tarleton got off to a flying start with D.Owen (22) and G.Gallimore (44) hitting the ball to parts of the ground. Wickets from Colin Fenny (3-39), Craig Williams (2-25) and Andy Addison (3-32) meant that Tarleton started to struggle. The highlight for New Vic in the field was a great catch at gully from Ste Saunderson. Andy Sheil (1-18) also got in on the act as Tarleton were all out for 139 with the last wicket being a run out. This Saturday the 2nd X1 welcome Chorley St James to Rufford Road.

Last Saturday the 1st X1 lost away to Rufford by 6 wickets. An under strength side travelled to Rufford who are top of the 1st division. New Victoria batted first and R.Lyon (5-30) took the top order away all caught. Joe Sawbridge (20) and Sean Cragg (20) showed some resistance before Nickson got in on the act. Nickson (5-18) took away the lower order as New Victoria were all out for 102. Andy Sheil (14) showed promise in the lower order. In reply Sean Cragg (2-34) and Andy Sheil (1-26) took away the dangerous top order including Sheil removing Golding with his slower ball. C.Wareing (15) was dismissed when his 1980's looking helmet fell onto the stumps. G.Ashcroft (50*) played some expansive shots as Rufford won by 6 wickets. Howard (1-8) dismissed R.Lyon with another slower ball.
New Vic second XI continued their disappointing form with a defeat at the hands of league leaders Bretherton. After losing the toss and being forced to field first New Vic got off to a decent start with Colin Fenny (1-43) bowling well and dismissing the opener early on. However that was about as good as it got in the field as opener D.Musson (52) passed his half century which was hardly fluent as he was put down 3 times in the field. G.Naylor (49) looked as though he was smashing himself to a brilliant half century before being dismissed by Craig Williams (3-67) who produced a wicket taking yet expensive return to the side. Mamzy Rahman (2-31) also picked up a couple of wickets but Bretherton eventually declared on 2-31.
In reply New Vic got off to an encouraging start with Mamzy Rahman (13) taking the attack to the opening bowlers. Matt Wilde (31) proved the choice to give him the responsibility of opening the batting was a good one but wickets fell quickly around him. Ste Saunderson (11) showed a bit of resistance but New Vic were eventually bowled out for a lackluster 98.

New Victoria 1st team travelled to Earlestown and made a good start as the home side batted. After removing their opener cheaply the second wicket partnership accelerated to 100, before New Vic took a second wicket. Paul Hames took 5-68 and Sean Cragg, Barry Mills and Johnny Howard each took a wicket as New Vic looked to bowl the home side out. At 170-9 a victory looked possible but a last wicket stand of 40 saw Earlestown declare on 218-9.
The total was always going to be a difficult one to chase down but after losing a couple of early wickets Sean Cragg (34) and Martin Howard (42) began to exert some pressure on the home team bowlers. Paul Hames added 18, but the visitors were eventually bowled out for 149 as they pushed for extra bonus points. It was a spirited display and New Vic must continue to pick up valuable bonus points in games if they are to avoid relegation. This Saturday the 1st X1 travel to Rufford.

Following Brabners Chaffe Street's sponsorship of New Victoria Cricket Club's successful and pioneering 2007 cricket tour to Bulgaria, it is Southport's turn to welcome the Bulgarians to the UK in a return fixture. On Thursday 16th July 2009, Southport will host its first international cricket match at Crossens Recreation Ground, Rufford Road, Crossens when New Victoria Cricket Club take on the Bulgarian National team in a 30 overs per side match in front of the Mayor and Mayoress of Sefton.

The match will commence at 3pm, following which there will be a reception for the teams at the Shrimper pub on Fylde Road, Crossens, from 8:30pm when the Bulgarians will have their first taste of a traditional Lancashire hot pot.

New Victoria 1st X1 suffered another defeat this time away at Tarleton. Batting first New Vic lost early wickets to the bowling of R.Johnson (2-26) and S.Wilkinson (5-18). In between the showers Dale Johnson (36) and Martin Howard (17) got the scoreboard ticking over that was after Sam O'Sullivan (13) had made a start. Late runs from Owen Jamieson (13) took the away side to 110 all out. Tarleton lost early wickets as Barry Mills (2-37) put the pressure on. The middle order collapsed but Tarleton won by 5 wickets thanks to runs from D.Thompson (48*), W.Taylor (22) and J.Goymer (36*). Joe Sawbridge (2-29) allowed New Vic to pick up 2 bowling points. This Saturday the 1st X1 are at home to Chorley St James. Congratulations to Barry Mills for playing for the league rep side last Sunday.
New Vic 2nds were frustrated by the afternoon rain at home against Rufford 2nds. They were going great guns thanks to Martin Doran (63) and a variety of partners, when the rains came. Doran and Andy Sheil added 82 for the 4th wicket and eventually Keith Pacey declared on 175 for 7. Rufford had a great start thanks to Cookson (40) and L.Nickson (67),with an opening stand of 116 but then Doran (3-13) and Andy Addison (3-44) removed the upper order. Pacey (2-6) came on 'at the death' and with three overs left Rufford needed 35 runs and New Vic 2 wickets. This signalled a final deluge of monsoon proportions, with the teams having to settle for a draw This Saturday the 2nds travel to Winstanley Park.

New Victoria experienced one extreme to the other in the space of a week having beat league leaders Rufford last Saturday, they slumped to a disapointing defeat at Mawdsley. The day could have turned out differently as New Vic made an impressive start with the bat, registering 45 without loss, as Schofield (22) and O'Sullivan (17) made a positive start. Martin Howard was the only other bastmen to score double figures as the visitors collapsed to 72 all out, with the last 7 wickets falling for 15 runs, as Caddick emerged as the pick of the bowlers with 6-23. There was evident swing in the air and Mawdsley's change bowlers performed admirably but there can be no excuse for the capitulation of the New Vic bastmen.
The bowlers made life difficult for Mawdsley as the home team lost two early wickets to Paul Hames (3-19). Johnny Howard (1-6) and Chris Hames (2-22) also picked up wickets as they crossed the finishing line after losing 6 wickets. New Victoria 1st X1 travel to Tarleton this Saturday.

New Victoria 1sts registered their first league win of the season against the odds at home to top of the league Rufford, thanks to an all round team performance. After winning the toss New Vic decided to bat and started hesitantly and they were reduced to 13-2. The in-form Martin Howard (28) and Sam O'Sullivan (19) steadied the ship and clocked up a 50 partnership as New Vic looked to register a decent total. When the two fell the score was 65-4 and the typical collapse appeared imminent. Another solid and patient 50 partnership from Chris Hames (26) and Paul Hames (33) put New Vic on the front foot and an important 20 from Sean Cragg edged the hosts closer to the maximum batting points, which were secured by Jamieson and Johnny Howard as New Vic finished on 178-9, the first time they have batted 50 overs this season.
Rufford started confidently but Barry Mills removed two of the top three and Paul Hames dismissed the other opener. There was a long partnership which threatened to derail New Vic's hopes of a victory as Kenny (67) slugged the ball to all parts of the ground, until Johnny Howard entered the fray. The young seamer is showing more than promise this season in the 1st team and he picked up a valuable 3 wickets from his 6 overs. Chris Hames bowled with discipline taking 2-9 from 6 overs, and Barry Mills came back and bowled with agression to finish with figures of 4-39. It was Chris Hames who took the final wicket with Jamieson taking a reflex catch behind the stumps to bowl the league leaders out for 154. Another difficult fixture awaits with Mawdsley away, but after this result New Vic must firmly believe they are more than capable of beating any team in the league.
This weekend New Vic 2nd X1 travelled to Rufford for a league and cup double header. On Saturday a New Victoria side with a lack of bowling power won the toss and decided to bat first, after losing a couple of early wickets the New Vic batsemen slowly got into their stride with a competent knock from Matt Wilde (25) and from the other end Andy Addison was well in his stride passing 50 in the process. A quick knock from Peter Hames (10) along with Addison pushed New Vic up towards a big total. After batting brilliantly for his whole innings Addison eventually brought up his maiden century, playing an array of shots in a fantastic knock. Boundaries were hard to come by late on but Addison (102*) assisted by Ste Saunderson (14*) guided New Vic to 173-5 off their 50 overs. Even with a big score on the board a weakened bowling attack meant New Vic knew it would take something special to win the game. Keith Pacey (4-61) bowled well throughout swinging the ball in to the right handed batsmen. Peter Hames (1-27) also started steadily as New Vic were beginning to the victory was achievable. Captain Keith Pacey decided it was time to slow things down and Ste Saunderson (2-22) kept the wickets coming assisted by Andy Addison (1-40) but New Vic were unable to prevent defeat, eventually losing by 2 wickets.
On Sunday New Vic again travelled to Rufford hoping to reverse their fortunes with victory in the Quarter Final of the Leyland Trophy. Batting first New Vic lost early wickets, but Matt Wilde (10) got off to a decent start. Jordan Hall (28) played some great cricket shot before eventually being caught at Mid Off. Ste Saunderson (13) provided some resistance but New Vic were eventually all out for a disappointing 108.
In reply Rufford got off to a slow start with Colin Fenny (2-22) dismissing the opening batsmen and the number 3 in the space of three balls. Martin Doran (0-4) kept the pressure on from the other end. The introduction of Jonny Howard (2-31) proved a good one as a tight finish looked likely. Keith Pacey (2-23) also made sure New Vic were still in with a shout but 108 proved to be 20 or 30 runs short as New Vic were eventually beaten by 4 wickets with 3 overs to spare.
Next week New Victoria 2nd X1 welcome Halsall West End to Rufford Road.

Matty Howard guided the under 13 team to victory on Thursday night scoring 68* including 12 fours and 1 six. Bowling first New Vic started well with George Mansall trapping the opener LBW. Rainford then started to score runs at a fast rate with Scott (27) and Wilson (15). The introduction of Harry Eyes (3-10) turning the ball caused confusion and the medium pace of Thomas Cope (1-12) limited Rainford to 92-7. In reply New Victoria lost early wickets and the slow bowling of Simms (3-15) meant that Rainford saw off the top order. Opener Matty Howard had different ideas batting with geat maturity, deciding how many runs where needed off the over and then seeing the over out. Howard looked in control and finished up with 68* and a 50 run partnership with George Mansall (4*) meant that the under 13's won by 6 wickets.

New Victoria travelled to Newburgh and despite experiencing defeat picked up some valuable bonus points. They registered a total of 139, largely thanks to Sam O'Sullivan's patient 48 on his long awaited return to the side. O'Sullivan came close to carrying his bat as he demonstrated some confident strokeplay. The top order failed to support him, but Jamieson and Shiel chipped in and allowed the visitors to clock up a competitive total.
The Newburgh openers began in cavalier fashion with some extravegent shots, before Hames dimissed Badgt thanks to a well taken catch from Joe Sawbridge. Cragg came on and took a wicket and was unlukcy not to take more, before the pick of the bowlers, Johnny Howard came into the attack. The young seamer was brimming with confidence, bowling with discipline, as he took 3-11 of his six overs which included two in two balls. At one stage it looked as though an improbable victory may have been on the cards but the Newburgh mid-lower order smashed home the winning runs and finished on 140-6.
New Vic seconds suffered only their second defeat of the season at the hands of Rufford at Rufford Road on Saturday. Batting first New Vic got off to a good start with Martin Doran (43) leading from the front assisted by Pete Hames (22) who played some good shots on his return to the side. Richard Wilson (13) also chipped in but New Vic lost wickets at regular intervals and were eventually all out for 130.
In reply Rufford got off to a good start with C.Cookson (16) and M.Ashcroft (25) leading the way. Colin Fenny (2-26) and Andy Addison (2-15) tried their best to stem the runs but T.Wright (34) got Rufford into a winning position as the chased down the total to finish on 132-6 with 3.3 overs to spare.
This week New Vic will face Rufford on both days away from home.

New Vic Catches 20/20 Fever!
On Tuesday night New Vic travelled to Halsall West End for their first 20/20 fixture after the first was rained off. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first New Vic got off to a slow but steady start with Andy Schofield (10) seeing off the opening bowlers. Jordan Hall (14) began to up the run rate as New Vic slowly got into their stride. Dale Johnson (26*) played an accomplished innings assisted by Owen Jamieson (13) who extinguished his 'Geoffrey Boycott' nickname. Ste Saunderson (20) got some quick runs at the end as New Vic finished on a respectable 117-7. As they took to the field for the second innings New Vic new that a good bowling performance was needed and Sean Cragg (2-3) and Barry Mills (2-9) duly obliged with Cragg removing the dangerman courtesy of a fantastic running catch on the boundary from captain Barry Mills. Joe Sawbridge entered the attack and immediately had an effect on proceedings dismissing the Halsall captain with the first ball of his spell on his way to 3 vital wickets. Keith Pacey (4-2) kept the wickets coming at the other end and a fantastic performance led New Vic to victory after bowling the home side out for 58.

New Victoria 1st team bounced back from last week’s disappointment to secure a determined draw against Earlestown at Rufford Road. On an overcast day Earlestown were put into bat and made a quick start as their openers took advantage of the short boundary and fast outfield. They raced to 60 without loss before Barry Mills removed the danger man, Melling, with Martin Howard taking a nonchalant catch on the boundary.
Mills continued to plug away and Joe Sawbridge’s bamboozling spin saw him pick up 4 wickets, whilst Chris Hames bowled tight from one end and picked up a couple of wickets in the process. The home side reduced the visitors to 138-9 and could smell a possible victory but could not anticipate the onslaught which followed. The last wicket put on 48 runs, with their number 7 scoring all of them. Earlestown were eventually bowled out for 186 with Mills finishing with 3-45.
In response New Victoria’s poor form with the bat continued and they were staring defeat in the eye as they struggled at 27-5. The in-form Martin Howard took the game to Earlestown and scored an impressive 35 before being dismissed to a good ball. With Mamzy Rahman (35) and Sean Cragg (13) at the crease and with only three wickets remaining Earlestown must have scented victory, but the youngsters showed great character as they crashed the ball round the park, whilst valuing their wicket. It was left to Hames and Jamieson to see out the final overs and secure the draw whilst picking up some much needed bonus batting points.
At Abbey Lane the second team had a frustrating afternoon as Dalton shut up shop for a draw. Batting first New Vic got off to a good start with Andy Addison (41) continuing his good form with the bat, Martin Doran (37) kept things ticking over in typical fashion at the other end before Jonny Howard (18) upped the run rate to allow New Vic to declare on 127-7.
New Vic strode out to field in upbeat mood but Dalton decided it was dead bat time from the off and bit of brilliance in the field from Jonny Howard with a direct hit run out to break the opening partnership. Keith Pacey (4-10) bowled well throughout and Colin Fenny (3-11) was as reliable as ever to leave Dalton 29-8 with 12 overs to spare when the resident brick wall came in to bat just getting everything he could behind the ball, even his toes. Dalton succeeded in frustrating the New Vic attack as they tediously batted out for a draw to finish on 29-9.
Rufford are the visitors to Rufford Road this weekend in a very important clash for the Crossens side.

New Victoria 1sts suffered another disapointing defeat at home to fellow strugglers Dalton. The must win fixture was surrendered in a limp fashion as bottom team Dalton took advantage of some loose bowling to register a total of 172. The four day European Tour to Slovakia and Austria may have taken its toll on the bowling and fielding but should not be used as an excuse for the number of full tosses which Dalton dispatched with ease. Paul Hames took 3 wickets whilst Cragg, Mills and Fenny each took a wicket. Chris Hames came on and bowled excellently to take 4-8 and restrict the visitors to reaching a declaration total.
As it transpired, 172 was always going to prove too much of a struggle for the home side and they were restricted to 30-2. Joe Sawbridge (22) and Paul Hames (19) showed some resistance as did Matty Simpson. The home side were eventually bowled out for 97 and they must now show some determination and character to begin winning games and climbing up the table.
New Vic 2nd's showed grit and determination with a very young team to secure a draw away at top of the league Winstanley Park. Fielding first New Vic got off to a great start limiting the league leaders to 78-6 with Craig Williams (2-21) and Jonny Howard (1-32) leading the line with great maturity. Skipper Keith Pacey then decided to slow things down and this paid off as Andy Addison (2-47) staked a claim for a regular bowling place. Keith Pacey also claimed 2 wickets to restrict Winstanley to 142-7 off their 50 overs thanks to a very determined display from the fielding side.
In reply New Vic got off to a great start with Andy Addison (27) and Richard Wilson (39) getting New Vic off to a very steady start, aiming to secure as many batting points as possible New Vic decided to send the hitters in and after a couple of quick wickets falling Craig Williams (20) started finding the middle of the bat hitting a big six in the process. New Vic deservedly played out the draw finishing on 107-7 and will be looking to get back to winning ways against Dalton 3rds at Abbey Lane this weekend.
On Sunday New Vic firsts lost out in the Sandhurst Shield to a strong Darwen side, Batting first Pete Hames (13) got New Vic off to a good start hitting 3 boundaries in the early overs. Wickets fell early on but Barry Mills had every right to feel aggrieved at an LBW decision. Joe Sawbridge (30) and Dale Johnson (34) put on a big partnership against tough bowling opposition and helped New Vic to 122 all out.
In reply Darwen got off to a good start with M Horsfield (44) hitting a large portion of the runs, Jonny Howard bowled well and finished with economic figures of 1-15 ably assisted by Craig Williams (1-18). Joe Sawbridge (1-13) then slowed things down from one end but nobody expected to see a piece of magic from the other end, Peter Hames rolled back the years with an outstanding left handed diving catch off the Bowling of Andy Addison (1-13) and he was certainly a lot quicker diving for the catch than he was getting up afterwards. 122 proved to be too small a target and Darwen eventually finished the game with a boundary to finish on 126-4.

IMPORTANT WEEKEND FOR NEW VIC
This weekend New Victoria Cricket Club face three important fixtures. The 1st X1 welcome Dalton to Rufford Road in a bottom of the table clash in division 1 and New Vic will be hoping to chalk up their first league win of the season. The 2nd X1 travel to Winstanley Park and could do with a win to stay in touch with the division 4 leaders. On Sunday the 1st X1 take on league leaders Darwen 3rds in the Sandhurst Shield Round 2 with the winners going through to the Semi Final.
Last weekend the 20/20 fixture and the 2nd X1 match at Abbey Lane were cancelled due to the weather leading up to the weekend. The 1st team match however took place against Aughton at Rufford Road. Aughton made a good start batting first with Tindall (40) getting the early runs. Wickets from Paul Hames (1-35) and Sean Cragg (2-29) got New Victoria back into the game. Millington (25) and Cullum (42) were dropped on a number of occasions and despite late wickets from Barry Mills (3-46) and Joe Sawbridge (1-31), Aughton finished on 152 for 8. In reply openers Graham Sweeney and Andy Schofield kept things tight before Martin Howard (32) and Barry Mills (20) got the runs flowing. Wickets from Charlton (2-9), Bunn (2-9) and Hughes (2-20) gave Aughton the smell of victory, but the home side dug in and finished on 97 for 7 and achieved a draw.
New Victoria junior section continues to flourish and all the age groups have tasted victory in 2009. The Under 18's have beaten Aughton and Tarleton, while the Under 13's have beaten Newburgh and had two matches rained off. The Under 11's have beaten Tarleton, while the under 9's are practicing on a Saturday morning. Anyone interested in joining the junior section should ring Andy on 01704 501531.
Breaking news New Victoria beat Slovakia by 60 runs. Batting first New Vic scored 149 for 5 thanks to Sean Cragg (46) and Barry Mills (30). In reply John Hames kept his international average intact by taking a wicket and Slovakia were all out for 89.

The tourists are leaving Southport on Sunday morning and will be based in Bratislava. Trips to Vienna to take on Pakistan Falcon CC and Austria CC are also planned before they return on Thursday. In 2009 an international match will be held in Crossens, New Victoria will host a match against Bulgaria. The Bulgarians will be in Southport in preparation for a European international tournament in Wales. On Thursday 16th July Bulgaria will continue their international development and this will be a unique opportunity to see international cricket on your doorstep. New Victoria are looking to help their close friends from Bulgaria and are looking for local business to support the event. If you can offer sponsorship please contact Owen Jamieson on 01704 531071.
New Victoria 1st X1 suffered another defeat at home to fellow strugglers Hesketh Bank. The day was frequently disrupted with rain but New Vic, who had put Hesketh Bank into bat, regularly took wickets and kept the score tight. Paul Hames took four wickets in a long spell, whilst Joe Sawbridge displayed some excellent spin bowling as he took 5 wickets after Sean Cragg had to come off early with an injury. The visitors were eventually bowled out for 93 after 44 overs.
New Victoria made hard work of responding and were soon in dire straights at 7-3. Chris Hames supported Joe Sawbridge in the middle order as he scored a fluent 32. With 18 to win and four wickets left victory looked inevitable, but yet again New Vic managed to collapse and ended up losing by 13 runs. This Saturday the 1st X1 welcome Aughton to Rufford Road.
The 2nd X1 slipped to their first defeat of the season away at a damp Chorley St James. After choosing to bat first New Vic struggled their way to 21-7, however the tail gained some respectability for New Vic when Martin Doran (19) and Curtis Rigby (16) showed that runs could be scored on the damp wicket before New Vic were eventually bowled out for a disappointing 61.
In reply Chorley started positively with R.Marshall (21) living on the edge after chipping the ball just over Mid Off 3 times, however with only 61 runs on the board New Vic decided to get as many bowling points as possible and Craig Williams (2-11) was unlucky not to finish with more wickets. Stand in keeper Matt Wilde also showed he is capable with the gloves taking 2 catches and participating in a run out but New Vic inevitably ended up losing the game by 6 wickets. This Saturday the second XI travel to Dalton 3rds looking to get back on the win trail and take home the full 20 points.
On Friday evening New Victoria play their 1st game in the Southport League 20/20 tournament away at Hindley St Peters.
