POSITIVE NEW VICTORIA

New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 lost their last game of the season to Chorley St James but many positives can be taken from the game and the season. Groundsman Brian Mills had produced a very good pitch considering the very wet conditions and New Vic batted first. The home side got off to a good start with Barry Mills (45) scoring runs as he has done all season. P.McNally (3-22) and P.Jackson (5-38) took the top order away before Jordan Hall (17) and Martin Howard (12) put on a partnership. New Victoria were all out for 90. In reply S.McNally got Chorley off to a good start with 58 before Jordan Hall took a great catch behind off the bowling of Mills. A change of bowling brought wickets with Joe Sawbridge (1-2) and Andy Sheil (2-11) both taking wickets. The game was starting to get interesting as Chorley struggled against the pace of Andy Sheil. The away side finally won by 5 wickets. Players and officials can now relax for the winter knowing they will be in Division 1 next season and make plans for the 2009 season.

NEW VIC LOOK FOR WINNING END

New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 will be looking for a winning end to the season as they welcome Chorley St James to Rufford Road. The Crossens based side currently sit in 8th position but points in the final game could take New Vic as high as 6th. Unfortunately last weeks game away at Earlestown was called off due to a waterlogged pitch and officials will hope that pitches will have recovered by this weekend. New Vic have achieved their first aim of the season that was to finish outside the relegation places. Officials and players can relax this winter not worrying what division they will end up in next season.
The 2nd X1 game against Dalton was called off on Friday night and the 4th division season has now come to an end. New Victoria finished in 3rd place and will be looking for a promotion push in 2009.

NEW VIC SECURE DIVISION 1 STATUS

New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 battled to a creditable draw against Dalton and are now ensured of their place in the First Division next season. Dalton also needed to win as they were second to bottom of the table. J.Stockley (18) and Whitehead (16) gave Dalton a good start but Paul Hames (3-38) and Barry Mills (1-72) then bamboozled the early Dalton batting and reduced the visitors to 40 for 4 wickets. Dalton were rescued by K. Raminizie (70) who put bat to ball aided by Chapman (19), Stockley (18) and Davies (16 not out). For the home team Martin Howard (3-50) and Sean Cragg (2-10) kept taking Dalton wickets and after their 50 overs Dalton totaled 176 for 9. After the tea interval New Vic lost skipper Barry Mills early on and it took the appearance of Robbie Andrew (5) to bring some semblance of order. Andrew stayed a long time without much credit in the scorebook, helped by some hitting from Sean Cragg (16) at the other end. As light worsened it became clear that the Dalton total was beyond the home team and that a draw was the next best outcome for New Vic. Andy Schofield (19 not out) batted through from the middle order with a variety of partners Mamzy Rahman (14), Dale Johnson (10) and finally Matty Simpson (24 not out) It was the defense of Schofield and the creative stroke play of Simpson that finally extinguished all Dalton hopes of victory. Dalton introduced seven bowlers but they could only take seven wickets evenly between them. Finishing on 122 for 7, New Vic ended with six bonus points to their credit. With two games to go the 1st XI visit Earlestown on Saturday with hopes of cementing their mid-table position.
Over in Wigan the 2nd Xl had to endure the joys of the Goose Green ground as the Holt's Arms, which has more similarity with a switchback railway than a cricket ground. Trying to play anything like a conventional cricket shot on the undulating wicket was impossible. Craig Williams (22) soon realized that defense was pointless and launched an attack with a six and two fours. Alex Rigby (10) did likewise with a six that disappeared over the boundary. Otherwise balls that 'bounced' tended to keep low or roll and this restricted New Vic to 39 in exactly an hour. This didn't leave the bowlers with much to work with; however Williams continued his good form with an early wicket thanks to a good catch behind the stumps from Owen Jamieson. New Vic bowlers Colin Fenny (1-24), Craig Williams (1-13) and Keith Pacey (1-2) took the three wickets. Apparently Goose Green are moving to their new ground next season which hopefully will be slightly more user-friendly. The 2nd Xl will probably finish in third place as their season comes to a close on Saturday when they welcome Dalton 3rds to Rufford Road.

Last Saturday New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 welcomed bottom of the table Newburgh to Rufford Road. Newburgh batted first and despite losing B.Proud early on made a reasonable start with M.Houghton (29) and S.Murphy (18) scoring runs. Paul Hames (5-26) started to take wickets while keeping things tight. At times the home side seemed to be taking victory for granted while N.Coomber (21) and P.Muirhead (32) took advantage. Martin Howard (3-24) took away the middle order as Newburgh were dismissed for 129. When New Vic came out to bat it was obvious that rain would come at some point. Despite losing two early wickets taken by R.Houghton (3-34), number 3 batsmen Robbie Andrew (38*) was patient against the Newburgh bowlers. Sean Cragg (33) stepped up the run rate as a victory looked more likely. After a rain break New Victoria went on all out attack and despite losing 3 further wickets, Matty Simpson hit a 6 in the final over which to assure victory. A no ball took the home side to victory and they will look to consolidate their mid table position at home to next to bottom Dalton.
This week the second XI travelled to Tarleton 3rds, after seeing a very soft pitch which looked like it was going to be extremely hard to score on stand in captain Brian Mills won the toss and elected to field first. The skipper's decision was justified as Colin Fenny ripped through the top order going on to claim figures of 6-21. Jonathan Howard kept things tight from the other end before Craig Williams (2-9) got himself back amongst the wickets. Andy Sheil (1-3) then finished off the innings with his trademark 'Off Cutter' and left the home side with a sub standard total of 54a.o.
After tea openers Andy Sheil and Owen Jamieson strode out with New Vic only needing 55 runs to win, However in the first over of the innings Andy Sheil was bowled by K.Marshall and it seemed the run chase may be a lot harder than first thought, Owen Jamieson then swiftly followed and New Vic found themselves 7-2 with Craig Williams coming to the crease having been promoted to number 4 in the batting order. After a bit of a shaky start Williams soon got into his stride against with a great innings of 37* which included 3 sixes. Richard Wilson did not offer many attacking strokes but held up the other end batting throughout the innings making 6*. Next week New Vic travel to league champions Goose Green.

RAIN DENIES NEW VIC VICTORIES

Last Saturday both teams at New Victoria Cricket Club were denied victory by the weather needing 1 wicket to win. At Rufford Road the 1st X1 took on Darwen in a game between two middle of the table teams with the loser possibly being dragged into a relegation battle. New Victoria got off to a great start with captain Barry Mills (80) in great form after his 98* at Halsall. Darwen had no answer as Mills smacked the ball to all parts of the ground. Once departed Andy Schofield (17) and Mamzy Rahman (18) looked in control against some wayward bowling. M.Horsefield (6-69) bowled 23 overs and dismissed the lower order as at one stage maximum batting points looked likely. New Vic were all out for 152 as G.Bonner (3-21) got late order wickets. After tea the weather took a turn for the worse but never seemed bad enough to come off. Barry Mills also led from the front with the ball taking 5 for 25 backed up by Paul Hames (3-29). Then the home side then were convinced they had Shaikh caught behind with all close fielders appealing strongly, unfortunately neither the batsmen or umpire moved. Shaikh went onto score 58 and along with Bonner (28*) got Darwen back into the game. With one wicket left for victory the umpires strangely asked if the batsmen wanted to go off due to the rain. Obviously the batsmen walked off, play was resumed with 3 overs left which Darwen survived. New Victoria dominated the game from start to finish and on another day would have won the game. The home side picked up 12 points from the game and this week take on bottom of the table Newburgh at Rufford Road.
On a rain soaked pitch in Bretherton, a weakened 2nd X1 were unlucky not to come away with all 20 points. Batting first the game looked to have turned sour as a noise which was surely heard in near by Tarleton was turned down by the umpire. Andy Sheil then went on to make 27 in a fifty run opening partnership with Jonathan Howard (14). Martin Doran then came in at 3 and as usual, supplied the goods with a well crafted 43. With a lessened batting line up it was vital that wickets were few and far between but as the middle order failed it was up to Craig Williams (10) to provide some stability as New Vic chased batting points. This left Peter Hames the chance to role back the years and with a quick 22 he certainly did. Once Hames was dismissed the lower order fizzled away and New Victoria found themselves 150 all out. With limited Bowling options available for stand in skipper Hames achieving a win was going to be a tall order. Williams and Howard kept things nice and tight to begin with but as all season Williams had no luck with the ball. Howard eventually broke the 31 run opening. Hames then turned to Martin Doran and as earlier with the bat, he rose to the occasion with figures of 4-11. Andy Sheil produced the ball of the innings with his slower ball off cutter confusing the batsman, he finished with figures of 2-31. Hames then brought himself on claimed 2-4. Rain had been falling through out the second innings and play could have been drawn to a halt at any time but with Bretherton finding themselves 102-9 decided enough was enough and called a stop to the days proceedings. Unfortunately this cost the visitors almost certain 20 points but they can not moan as with an inexperienced side were not expecting to gain 12 points. A special mention must go to Matt Wilde, with a seemingly nasty ankle injury sustained a few weeks back was brought back into the team and found himself behind the stumps. With only 10 extras given away he can hold his head up high. The Second X1 look to push on with a win away at Tarleton this Saturday.

NEW VIC SECURE VITAL VICTORY

Last Saturday New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 beat Halsall West End by 87 runs to help ease thoughts of relegation and help the team look towards mid table safety. With both teams hovering above the relegation zone the result of this game was always going to be important. New Vic had a strong batting line up with 11 players able to bat anywhere in the order. Away from home New Vic batted first losing two early wickets. Then Barry Mills (98*) beat his previous personal best score to lead from the front as captain. The home side bowlers struggled against a determined Mills who played some wonderful cricket shots and was unlucky not to reach his maiden century. Joe Sawbridge (46) also got in on the act supporting his captain before being dismissed by Dave Johnson. Andy Schofield (15*) allowed New Victoria to finish on 186 for 3. In reply Halsall proved no match against the two opening bowlers. New Vic have two opening bowlers who can cause trouble to any batting line up in the league, at one end Paul Hames and at the other Barry Mills (3-9) showed his all rounder qualities. The Halsall batsmen had trouble in scoring runs with Dave Johnson (23) and M.Finch (20) making runs in the top order. Martin Howard (2-18) continued his impressive season with the ball dismissing the middle order. Impressive wicket keeping from Matty Simpson including two catches proved to be vital in this game. It was evident after a while that this match was going to go down to the wire as the home side looked to bat out for the draw. Up stepped Paul Hames (5-28) to take the final two wickets to win the game for the Crossens based side. New Victoria will be in good spirits for the visit of Aughton to Rufford Road this Saturday. The Crossens based side will be looking to overturn the 1 wicket defeat away at Aughton earlier in the season.
Back at Rufford Road the 2nd X1 got off to a good start batting first with Andy Addison (19) and Richard Wilson (16) putting on an opening partnership of 42. Robbie Andrew (14) showed resistance in difficult conditions in the match between 2nd and 3rd place teams in division 4. S.Unsworth (4-10) bowled a good line that proved too good for the home batting line up. Ste Saunderson had the photographers diving for cover as he hit a massive 6 into the bowling green off the bowling of Ackers. The lower order showed little resistance as New Vic were all out 84. In reply Winstanley Park rode their luck with Jonathan Howard (1-28) and Keith Pacey proving all sorts of problems. The change of bowling produced panic in the opening pair with Andy Addison (3-19) providing variation. Curtis Rigby pulled off two impressive catches as the batsmen couldn't handle the full toss delivery. Winstanley Park took their time in scoring the runs but eventually they won by 6 wickets. New Victoria will be looking to have a stronger team out this Saturday when they play the reverse fixture away at Winstanley Park.

NEW VIC INVOLVED IN LAST OVER DECIDER

New Victoria Cricket Club 2nd X1 lost to Chorley St James last Saturday by 1 wicket in the very last over of the game. Batting first New Vic got a off to a good start with Andy Addison (23) and Martin Doran (28) seeing off the opening bowlers and at one stage were 55 for 1. Lots of batsmen got starts with Ste Saunderson (22) hitting the slow left arm bowler out of the ground. M.Mitchell (4-51) and S.Foster (3-33) caused problems all afternoon but 24 not out from Andy Sheil meant that the away side were all out for 142. In reply S.Foster (49) was scoring runs but found partners hard to come by. D.Rigby (18) and W.McKenzie (20) stuck around with Foster for a while. Jonathan Howard (3-42) and Keith Pacey (6-53) blew away the middle order as a close game was inevitable. A couple of dropped catches allowed the Chorley batsmen a 2nd chance before the match went down to the wire. The home side eventually won the match in a copy of the previous game between the two sides this season. New Vic are still in 2nd place and welcome 3rd placed Winstanley Park to Rufford Road this Saturday.
Back at Rufford Road the 1st X1 were soundly beaten by title contenders Tarleton. New Victoria batted first and part from Barry Mills (20) and Sean Cragg (11) very little resistance was shown. Good bowling from I.Simcox (4-30) and A.Mills (4-26) restricted the home side to 80 all out. The opening bowlers for New Vic bowled well with Barry Mills (3-39) and Sean Cragg (0-8) causing the top order lots of problems. Eventually thanks to J.Dyson (30*) Tarleton won by 7 wickets. This Saturday the 1st X1 travel to Halsall West End with both teams looking for points, so they aren't drawn to a relegation battle.

NEW VIC LOSE OUT TO HESKETH BANK

Last Saturday New Victoria 1st X1 lost away to Hesketh Bank by 34 runs. Hesketh Bank batted first losing early wickets with Barry Mills (5-34) and Paul Hames (2-15) causing trouble with the ball. R.Hill (22) and R.Bannister (41) caused some resistance while riding their luck as New Vic failed to hold catching chances. Martin Howard (3-12) removed the middle and lower order as the home side were all out for 108. New Victoria made a good start with Barry Mills (17) and Sam O'Sullivan (21) scoring early runs. Unfortunately the rest of the batsmen hadn't read the script as the away side were skittled out for 74. D.Nelson (4-8) was the bowler who did the most damage but with a little more application this could have been a win for the Crossens based side. This Saturday New Victoria welcome Tarleton to Rufford Road.
The 2nds beat Halsall West End last Saturday back at Rufford Road by 109 runs. Batting first New Victoria got off to a good start with Andy Addison (21) and Andy Schofield (14) scoring early runs. A patient innings by Alex Rigby held the middle order together but at one stage the home side were 72 for 7. Then a 54 run partnership between Jonathan Howard (46) and Matty Simpson (23) and Howard also had a 25 run partnership with Colin Fenny as New Vic were all out for 151. J.Graham (Snr) (5-61) was the pick of the Halsall bowlers. In reply the away side lost control not being patient and building partnerships. Colin Fenny (7-15) was too quick for the upper order and with two excellent catches by Matty Howard a New Vic victory looked likely. Keith Pacey (2-9) and Steve Saunderson finished the game dismissing McGhee LBW. Halsall West End were all for 42. This Saturday the 2nds travel to Chorley St James.
Congratulations to the Under 15's who beat Halsall West End to clinch the division C title.

NEW VIC EXPERIENCE FINAL OVER HEARTBREAK

Last Saturday New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 put up a great performance against league leaders Mawdesley losing in the last over. New Vic got off to a good start with Sam O'Sullivan (19) frustrating the home side bowlers. A partnership between Sean Cragg (44) and Joe Sawbrige (30) put the away side into a good position. Robbie Andrew (27*) and Barry Mills (13*) allowed New Victoria to finish on 147 for 6. The Mawdesley bowlers found it difficult against a determined batting line up. In reply Mawdesley got off to a good start with T.Slinger (62) scoring the early runs. Then Paul Hames (3-47) made the batsmen panic and along with Joe Sawbridge (2-13) the Mawdesley batsmen were not used to batting in this position this season. R.Dickinson (21*) kept his head and in the final over and with 8 wickets down Mawdesley won by 2 wickets. New Victoria gained 10 points from the match and will be looking to continue their good form against Hesketh Bank away next Saturday.
Back at Rufford Road the 2nd X1 took on 2nd in the table Bretherton and won by 90 runs. Batting first New Victoria lost a couple of early wickets but sensible batting from Martin Doran (14) and Matty Hawksworth (30) kept the scoring ticking over. The home sides strength and depth in the batting was shown in this game with Keith Pacey (25) and Ste Saunderson (29) coming in at 6 and 7 respectfully. Saunderson upped the run rate with two big sixes and late runs from Jack Sawbridge (11*) allowed New Vic to declare on 150 for 7. In reply Bretherton struggled early on with Martin Doran (5-21) cutting the ball back in. S.McIntosh (21) who earlier in the day had blood pouring out his nose after being hit keeping wicket, was the only batsmen to look confident while batting. Keith Pacey (3-8) got in on the act as Bretherton were all out for 60. The 2nds will look to continue their good form next Saturday at home to Halsall West End.
The Under 11's beat Rufford at home last Saturday scoring 298

NEW VIC HOLD TIGHT AGAINST RUFFORD

Last Saturday New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 drew with high flying Rufford at Rufford Road. Rufford batted first losing an early wicket with Barry Mills removing one of the openers. Even captain Mark Golding fell cheaply as New Victoria looked to take control. An impressive innings from R.Kenny (46) and R.Lyon (58*) allowed Rufford to declare on 177 for 6. Sean Cragg (2-40) picked up a couple of wickets as Rufford rattled up the runs. In reply New Victoria were determined in their approach to batting. Most batsmen made starts but failed to go on and convert it into a big score. Robbie Andrew (39*) and Mamzy Rahman (16*) saw the Crossens based side to a draw and a last ball 4 gained another bonus point. New Victoria finished on 150 for 8. This Saturday the 1st team travel to Mawdesley.
At Abbey Lane the 2nds drew with Dalton but were massively on top at the end of the game. Batting first New Victoria lost a couple of early wickets but Matty Simpson (74*) and Martin Doran (28) put the Dalton bowlers to the sword. New Vic declared on 178 for 4. In reply Dalton lost 3 early wickets with Colin Fenny (3-5) proving too good for the Dalton batsmen. Then came one of the most boring passages of cricket ever with P.Hale (4*) playing dead bat for 2 hours. Late wickets from Andy Addison (2-3) and Peter Hames (1-1) made things a little interesting but Dalton were 26 for 7 from 44 overs. New Victoria picked up 13 points, this Saturday the 2nds welcome Bretherton to Rufford Road.

NEW VIC SLIP UP AT CHORLEY

Last Saturday New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 travelled to Chorley St James losing by 6 wickets. New Vic batted first and struggled against a top half side who bowled well. Graham Sweeney (12), Joe Sawbridge (19) and Dale Johnson made starts as New Victoria were all out for 97. P.Jackson (3-37) was the pick of the Chorley bowlers. In reply Chorley St James struggled losing 4 quick wickets Barry Mills (2-30) and Paul Hames (2-19) causing problems for the home batsmen. P.McNally (Jnr) (48*) and M.McNally (26*) took the game by the scruff of the neck and saw the home side to victory by 6 wickets. The league season is now half way through and New Victoria will be hoping to cement their mid table position and not be dragged into a relegation battle. This Saturday the 1st X1 welcome Rufford to Crossens.
The 2nd X1 beat Tarleton on Saturday by 46 runs. Batting first New Vic were in trouble at one stage being 32 for 4 after 25 overs. Andy Sheil (15) had provided early promise opening the innings, but a couple of run outs had restricted the home side. After drinks the runs started to flow with Keith Pacey (18) and Matty Hawksworth (22) starting to edge the total to some respectability. A further partnership between Craig Williams (18) and Andy Addison (22*) allowed the captain to declare on 125 for 7. P.Marshall (36) made a good start for Tarleton but Keith Pacey (8-11) blew away the middle and lower order. Tarleton were all out for 79 and the decision in declaring was a good call. This Saturday the 2nds travel to Abbey Lane to play Dalton 3rds.
On Sunday the 2nd X1 played Goose Green in the Leyland Trophy Semi Final at Skelmersdale. Goose Green batted first and lost early wickets being 32 for 3 at one stage. A.Bispham (58) and S.Kirby (58) put on a partnership of 115 as Goose Green finished on 153 for 8. The New Victoria innings started slowly and the away side were never up with the run rate. In the end New Vic finished on 106 for 6 losing by 47 runs.

NEW VIC DODGE THE SHOWERS

Last Saturday New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 dodged the rain to beat Earlestown by 6 wickets. With the rain lashing down the chances of play looked slim until a break in the showers suddenly appeared. Both teams and the umpires agreed that play was possible with the Rufford Road ground draining well. Earlestown must have regretted agreeing to play as they through away their wickets in a mad innings. Paul Hames (5-10) used the bowler friendly conditions to his advantage as the away side slumped to 36 all out. Barry Mills (3-21) and Sean Cragg (2-0) provided excellent support as the batsmen lost their heads. Purnell (16) was the only one who batted with any composure. In reply New Vic got off to a good start handling the conditions much better with Barry Mills (15). Four late wickets gave Earlestown some respectability with Edwards (2-14) and Horsefield (2-19) taking the wickets. The win takes the Crossens based side above Aughton until 7th place. This week the 1st team travel to Chorley St James.
On Sunday the 1st team lost to Rufford in the Sandhurst Shield by 9 wickets. Batting first New Victoria were all out for 72 with an experienced line up. Scully (4-19) and Nickson (3-16) did the most damage with Barry Mills (18) and Joe Sawbridge (14) showing some resistance. In reply Rufford must have been in a rush with Mark Golding (41*) hitting it to all parts of the ground. Ste Saunderson on his 1st team debut took a catch off the bowling of Barry Mills but Rufford were too strong. New Vic are now free to concentrate on cementing their mid table league position.
The 2nds had their match abandoned against Halsall West End on Saturday without a ball being bowled. This weekend on Saturday they welcome Tarleton to Rufford Road and on Sunday travel to Skelmersdale to face Goose Green in the Leyland Trophy semi final. The semi final is likely to be a lively affair and with league umpires New Vic will fancy their chances.

NEW VIC SHOW IMPROVED MENTALITY

Last Saturday New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 drew away at Dalton. In previous seasons the middle and lower order would have collapsed but this year the team has an improved outlook on batting. New Vic put Dalton into bat and had an early breakthrough with Paul Hames (2-26) having John Stockley caught at fine leg. M.Charman (33) played an innings of great maturity as Dalton looked for a big score. Once K.Ramineni (37) came to the crease the runs started to flow for the home side with other contributions from the middle order. Late wickets from Martin Howard (2-24) and Joe Sawbridge (2-35) including the dangerous Ramineni bowled allowed New Vic to dismiss Dalton for 171. In reply Barry Mills (24) seemed to be scoring all the runs before three quick wickets put Dalton into a good position. The home side will be kicking themselves dropping a lot of catches. At one stage with Jordan Hall (31) and Martin Howard (19) hitting the ball to all parts of the ground including out of the ground a New Vic victory was a possibility. In the end Paul Hames (13*) and Mamzy Rahman (17*) saw the game out for a draw with New Victoria picking up 8 points. The Crossens based side now sit in 8th place as the half way stage of the season approaches. New Vic are at home to Earlestown on Saturday and away to Rufford in the cup on Sunday.
Back at Rufford Road the 2nd X1 beat Dalton 3rd X1 by 127 runs. Batting first New Victoria made a solid start before losing Martin Doran (7) and Richard Wilson (22) to S.Parry (2-50). Then some excellent batting from Robbie Andrew (52*) and Andy Schofield (76*) allowed New Vic to declare on 177 for 2 after 40 overs. In reply Dalton struggled trying to bat for the draw, only M.Parry (21) took a liking to Ste Saunderson (2-30). Saunderson got Waterworth with an unplayable ball and it was game over after that. Jonathan Howard (3-0), Colin Fenny (2-4) and Andy Sheil (2-3) saw off the lower order as Dalton crumbled to 50 all out. The 2nd X1 travel to Halsall West End this Saturday on the back pitch at Tarleton.

NEW VIC HAVE WINNING WEEKEND

Last weekend New Victoria Cricket Club experienced the winning feeling in all 3 games that were played. The 1st X1 under the guidance of vice skipper Dale Johnson beat Hesketh Bank by 3 wickets. New Vic have a 100% record against teams in the lower half of the table and victories against these clubs will decide where in the table the Crossens based side finish. At Rufford Road Hesketh Bank were put into bat and lost two early wickets. The dangerous J.Edwards was trapped LBW by Paul Hames (2-31) and R.Hill was bowled by Sean Cragg (1-16). Despite taking a while to hit the ball off the square G.Melvin scored a useful 22 and along with D.Nelson (56) put on a partnership of 68. After that Hesketh Bank fell away with only D.Kirk (16*) getting into double figures. Martin Howard (2-20) and Sam O'Sullivan (4-24) blew the lower order away as the away team were all out for 126. In reply New Vic also lost a couple of early wickets but a strong middle order meant an exciting finish. Joe Sawbridge (17), Paul Hames (18) and Sam O'Sullivan (13) all made contributions as New Victoria needed 37 runs with 3 wickets remaining. Owen Jamieson (20*) and Andy Addison (8*) saw the team home to victory with 6 overs to spear. The Crossens based side now sit in 8th place and travel to Dalton this Saturday who sit below them.
The 2nd X1 also won on Saturday beating Halsall West End by 136 runs. Batting first on the back pitch at Tarleton New Vic made a good start after losing an early wicket. A 2nd wicket partnership of 149 between Andy Schofield (80*) and Bobby Eyes (80) allowed the captain to declare on 209 for 6. In reply Halsall had no answer to the New Vic bowling which was a lot more menacing. Craig Williams (3-21) and Ste Saunderson (3-16) meant that the home side were all out for 73.
On Sunday the 2nd X1 beat Winstanley Park by 83 runs. Batting first New Victoria got off to a good start with Martin Doran (17) and Richard Wilson (24) scoring the runs. Once they departed Robbie Andrew (39) and Jordan Hall (48) shared in a partnership of 75. Despite late wickets New Victoria finished on 166 for 9 after the allotted 40 overs. In reply Winstanley Park got off to a decent start with M.Parkinson (42) putting the result in some doubt for a while, but once he departed the rest collapsed. Jonathan Howard (3-17) and Keith Pacey (5-5) were the pick of the bowlers as the away side were all out for 83. The 2nd X1 play Goose Green in the semi final. This weekend New Vic are due to play Dalton 3rds at Rufford Road.
The winning run continued on Monday night with the Under 18's beating Hightown by 5 runs and the under 11's beat Tarleton.

On Monday the under 18's took on Hightown at Hightown and as usual this proved to be a thrilling encounter between two equally matched sides. New Victoria were put in to bat and started well with M.Rahman (27) and S. Cragg (34*) both batting well. This formed a base and M.Finch (26*) added even more runs for the away side to finished on 133 for 5. New Victoria Knew they needed to bowl well straight from the start and did with M. Finch (1-14) and C. Williams (1-16) making early inroads. However some quality batting from A. Glennon (25) and S. Hughes (27) put Hightown back into contention however some fantastic bowling from A. Sheil (3-33) meant Hightown needed 14 of the last over and then a couple of quick 2's and a 4 meant Hightown needed 6 to win of the last ball. S. Cragg bowled an unplayable ball to win the game for the away side. It was a fantastic game and New Vic just about deserved the win edgeing it with some great fielding. The 18's will be looking for a similar performance against Mawdesley next week.

SUPER MILLS BOWLS NEW VIC TO VICTORY

New Victoria CC 1st X1 captain Barry Mills bowled his side to victory against Newburgh with figures of 8 for 29 including a hat trick. This was a vital win against a Newburgh side that haven't won all season. Once the poorly planned road works by the Plough Roundabout had been passed on the way to Newburgh the game got started at 2pm. Newburgh decided to bat first on a track that had been used a number of times previously and started well with G.Murphy (27) and B.Broud (25) leading the way. At 60 for 1 the home side would have had hopes of a large total but New Vic had other ideas. A change of end seemed to make all the difference as Barry Mills led from the front and skittled the home side. Some batsmen could only stand and watch as swung one way and then the other. The New Vic captain completed his hat trick with an unplayable ball to dismiss A.Coomber. Rob Burns (2-16) got in on the act attacking the stumps at all times. The only other batsmen to get into double figures was P.Muirhead (16) as Newburgh were all out for 98. New Victoria sensed victory as they went out to bat. The top batsmen all got starts with Joe Sawbridge (33) using the short boundaries. Jordan Hall (12) made a contribution before Paul Hames (15*) saw the side to victory by 3 wickets, A.Coomber (4-31) being the pick of the Newburgh bowlers. The win takes New Victoria out of the bottom 2 and the 1st X1 will be in high spirits for the visit of Hesketh Bank.
Back at Rufford Road New Victoria 2nd X1 took on a Wigan based team in Goose Green. The away side used their usual umpire to help them put on a large total. He was unwilling to give any LBW's and a story was going round that he had been disciplined earlier in the season for giving someone out. E.Bispham (21), A.Bispham (23) and C.Morgan (21) got Goose Green going before M.Prescott (66*) broke free. Wickets from Andy Sheil (3-51) was the highlight for New Vic before Goose Green declared on 181. Early wickets from D.Johnson (4-29) put New Victoria on the back foot. The Goose Green players continued to wind up the home youngsters by their choice of language not usually heard in the Southport League. Robbie Andrew (34) and Andy Sheil (16) frustrated the away side for a while. It was left to Colin Fenny (17*) to face the final over, which he kept out fantastically. The Goose Green captain wasn't happy that his team hadn't won storming off the field without clapping off the batsmen. He must feel that he and his team have a god given right to win every game and their actions on the field give out a very poor attitude to the game of cricket. Unfortunately it looks as though Goose Green might win the Division 4 title this season, but they won't win any friends. The 2nd X1 had their Leyland Trophy match called off because of the weather, it will be replayed this Sunday.

Last Saturday New Victoria 1st X1 lost to Tarleton by 9 wickets. Batting first Dale Johnson (17) and Joe Sawbridge (20) made good starts. Tarleton then took control with D.Huyton (3-35) and C.Buck (3-14) blowing away the middle order. Late runs from Paul Hames (19) and Mamzy Rahman (12) meant the New Victoria were all out for 106. In reply Tarleton scored runs for fun with M.Gray (46) and D.Thompson (34*) doing the damage. This Saturday New Vic have a massive game away at Newburgh, who haven't won a game so far this season.
The 2nd X1 drew with Winstanley Park at Rufford Road. B.Mosalla (2-21) and M.Duffy (4-36) put the away side into a great position, but Andy Schofield (42) kept the scoreboard ticking over. Ste Saunderson (14) and Craig Williams (34*) meant that New Vic finished on 156 for 9. Alex Rigby hit a last ball 6 to finish off the innings in style. In reply Winstanley Park started well with M.Parkinson (39) playing some impressive shots. Wickets from Craig Williams (2-34) and Colin Fenny (3-17) kept New Victoria in the game. B.Mossala (25) and M.Hendry (16) looked like they had secured victory for the Wigan based side, but Keith Pacey (3-8) had other ideas. With 7 overs remaining and only 23 runs for victory, Winstanley Park shut up shop. Despite some good bowling Winstanley Park survived finishing on 135 for 8. This Saturday the 2nd X1 are at home to Goose Green on Saturday and at home to Winstanley Park on Sunday.
Last week the Under 11's beat Fleetwood Hesketh in the league and also Southport Trinity in the cup. The Under 13's put in a good display against Southport Trinity before the rain started to fall.

NEW VIC PROGRESS IN SANDHURST SHIELD

Last Sunday New Victoria 1st X1 beat Darwen by 2 runs to progress to the 2nd round of the Sandhurst Shield. New Vic had a team including a mixture of 1st team regulars and in form 2nd team players. Batting first Barry Mills (59) got the away side off to a fast start with only N.Jackson (4-24) causing any trouble to the New Victoria batsmen. Jordan Hall (56*) continued the good form he has shown in the 2nd team and along with Owen Jamieson (33) saw the away side to a final total of 197 for 7 off 45 overs. Darwen got off to a good start in reply with S.Painter (24), A.Mulla (27) and A.Brown (51) scoring the runs. The introduction of Joe Sawbridge (3-39) caused a change of fortunes as the balance of power kept changing hands. Wickets from Sean Cragg (2-29), Craig Williams (2-31) and Mamzy Rahman (2-25) put New Victoria in control with only 1 wicket to win. The Darwen captain S.Sharples (14*) edged Darwen towards an unlikely victory before his partner hit a ball in the air to Graham Sweeney on the leg side boundary. New Vic won by 2 runs, this win should give the team more confidence for the league games ahead. The Crossens based side will face the winners of Dalton and Rufford in the 2nd round. Well done to all the players that played on Sunday for their great team spirit.
The day before the 1st X1 lost to Halsall West End by 7 wickets. Batting first New Victoria made 119 all out with P.Morton (4-31) and B.Davis (3-23) taking the wickets for Halsall. Joe Sawbridge (21), Martin Howard (25) and Barry Mills (19) made contributions. Despite a couple of early wickets Barry Mills (2-28) and close appeals Halsall won by 7 wickets. B.Davis (50*) completed his impressive performance with a half century. This Saturday New Victoria travel to top of the league side Tarleton.
New Victoria 2nds travel to Chorley St James and were involved in a very close game similar to the first team game the week before. Batting first New Vic lost wickets at regular intervals while Andy Addison (41) kept the score board ticking over. Jordan Hall (32) continued his good form in partnership with Ste Saunderson (13). Craig Williams (12) put the slow bowler to all parts of the ground including a straight six. The away side were all out for 133 with M.Mitchell taking 5 for 43. In reply Chorley St James made a good start with C.Ainsworth (22) and R.Marshall (28) putting the home side in control. Wickets from Martin Doran (3-44) and Keith Pacey (5-37) meant that Chorley were 128 for 9 with 6 overs left. A tense final wicket stand between Burrows (13*) and Mitchell meant that the home side won by 1 wicket. On another day the chances would have gone to hand but everyone agreed it was a pleasure to play in such a good competitive game played in the correct spirit. This Saturday the 2nd X1 welcome Winstanley Park to Rufford Road.
On Monday the Under 11's beat Fleetwood Hesketh by 6 runs.

NEW VIC RESULT DECIDED ON A KNIFE EDGE

Last Saturday New Victoria travelled to Aughton in the 1st division and in a very close game the result was only decided in the very last over. Batting first New Victoria made a reasonable start with Barry Mills (18) seeing off the early bowlers. Joe Sawbridge (24) and Graham Sweeney (24) kept the scoreboard ticking over as the ball slowed up on the longish outfield. Mamzy Rahman was interestingly given out bowled even with both umpires totally unsure if the ball did hit the stumps. Some interesting shots in the last over from Matty Simpson (8*) and Sean Cragg (8*) meant that New Victoria finished on 109 for 7 after 50 overs. The thought in the changing rooms was this would be a competitive total in the conditions. It was looking grim for the away side when P. Nolan (44) smashed the ball to all parts of the ground. The introduction of Paul Hames (6-34) changed the game. Barry Mills (3-24) also got in on the act taking a good low catch at point as a close finish looked likely. J.Bunn (14) swung the game back in the favour of Aughton before Matty Simpson took a catch over his shoulder to dismiss the lower order batsmen. A scrambled single in the last over meant that Aughton won by 1 wicket, finishing on 110-9. This weekend the 1st X1 welcome old rivals Halsall West End to Rufford Road and then travel to Darwen on the Sunday in the Sandhurst Shield.
Back at Rufford Road Jordan Hall (48) continued his good batting form against Goose Green. Runs from Martin Doran (19) and Robbie Andrew (19) had already got the home side off to a good start. The only resistance from the lower order came from Keith Pacey (14) as New Victoria were all out for 107. Despite some early pressure from the bowlers Goose Green went on to win by 9 wickets with A.Bispham (56*) scoring the majority of the runs. This weekend the 2nd X1 travel to Chorley St James.
On Monday night the Under 18's beat Dalton by 7 wickets with Brett Phipps taking a hat trick and figures of 4 for 6 on his Under 18 debut. The Under 15's have started their 2008 season in good form currently sitting top of division C with 3 wins from 3 games. The Under 13's started their season with a victory against Rainford but lost to Ormskirk last week.

NEW VIC TRIUMPH IN BIG MTACH

On Saturday New Victoria triumphed against Darwen by 5 wickets to win their 1st game of the season. Less Graham Sweeney who's sat nav system got him lost, New Victoria had increased motivation after a couple of inspirational team talks. Darwen started well and at drinks were 80 for 2. T.Beasley (44) looked in control before being well caught by Mamzy Rahman, only the top four got into double figures. Barry Mills (5-34) and Rob Burns (4-22) skittled the Darwen batting line up who lost 8 wickets for 30 runs. New Vic looked sharp in the field with keeper Owen Jamieson taking a sharp catch behind the stumps. Darwen were all out for 109. In reply New Victoria started well with Dale Johnson (17) and Barry Mills (19) seeing off the opening bowlers. Graham Sweeney (31*) saw the team through to victory along with Joe Sawbridge (31). Even a couple of late wickets couldn't dampen the mood of the away side and as Andy Schofield called Graham Sweeney through for the winning run the players on the side showed their delight. New Victoria finished on 110 for 5. This Saturday the 1st X1 travel to Aughton, 2pm start.
Back at Rufford Road the 2nd X1 were also in good form against Tarleton. The home side batted first and the runs started to flow with Martin Doran (68) looking in good form. Robbie Andrew (24) also cashed in before Under 18 Jordan Hall (47) continued his form from last season before being given out lbw tantalisingly just 3 runs short of his first adult half century. In reply Tarleton lost a wicket in the first over Keith Pacey bowling opener P.Marshall. Tarleton had no real intent to chase the total and regular wickets fell. Alex Rigby took a magnificent catch diving backwards off the bowling of Martin Doran to dismiss Lucas. Then Ste Saunderson was turning Tarleton into a spin with Robinson being caught by Craig Williams diving forward at slip. Tarleton were able to hold out for the loss of 5 wickets as they finished with 60 runs, 122 runs behind the New Victoria total. The game finished as a draw the home side picking up 12 points.

NEW VIC TRAVEL FOR BIG MATCH AGAINST DARWEN

This Saturday New Victoria Cricket Club 1st X1 travel to Darwen to take on their 3rd team in the 1st division of the Southport and District Cricket League. With both teams sitting towards the bottom of the league the match will provide New Vic with the chance to gain 20 points. This week Rob Burns makes a return after a few years out the game.
Last week the 1st X1 lost to high flying Mawdesley by 121 runs. Mawdesley batted first at Rufford Road and scores from T.Slinger (53), B.Parr (22), B.Dickinson (29) and aussie N.Fitzpatrick (23) allowed the away side to rack up a score of 164-7 dec. The home bowlers did tie down the batsmen for a while with Barry Mills (2-55), Sean Cragg (2-19) and Martin Howard (2-43) taking wickets. The total was always too much for a struggling batting line up with aussie N.Fitzpatrick (2-8) and M.Caddick (3-7) toppling the top order. Graham Sweeney provided some resistance and late runs from Mamzy Rahman (15) and Sean Cragg (9) saved real embarrassment as New Victoria were all out for 43.
Last Saturday the 2nd X1 travelled to Bretherton. Batting first New Victoria got off to a reasonable start with Martin Doran (21) and Jordan Hall (12) scoring the runs. More runs from Andy Sheil (22) meant that the away side were all out for 82. In reply Bretherton lost an early wicket Sheil having T.Turner trapped LBW. Wickets from Keith Pacey (3-18) meant the result was in the balance for a while. Eventually runs from T.Kelly (20*) and D.Vincent (25*) meant that Bretherton won by 6 wickets. The 2nds welcome Tarleton 3rds to Rufford Road this Saturday.

MILLS AND HOWARD PUT ON BOWLING SHOW

New Victoria 1st X1 travelled to Rufford last Saturday for the 1st match of the 2008 season. Before both games players, officials and spectators stood for a minute silence in memory of ex player, captain and secretary Rob Jones. All the New Victoria players wore black armbands in respect of a great club man. The club wishes to pass on their condolences to the family.
On an early season pitch New Vic got stuck into their long time rivals. Unfortunately pace bowler Paul Hames damaged his ankle after bowling 3 overs but this seemed to increase the motivation of the away sides bowlers. J.Nickson (16) and M.Golding (14) seemed to be going along nicely for Rufford before Martin Howard produced one of his amazing off spinners. Golding couldn't believe what had happened and to go along with Howard's diving catch at mid off New Vic made regular dismissals. S.Wright (25) and R.Brookfield (20) did get a partnership going but they all seemed to have a problem with Howard's turning delivery. Sean Cragg (1-29) had the ball swinging in the cold wind before Barry Mills (5-32) got in on the act. Rufford were all out for 108. In reply New Victoria made a steady start with Dale Johnson (18) looking set. R.Lyon (4-23) and C.Brookfield (3-7) took apart the away batting line up as New Vic slumped to 66 all out. Next week the 1st team welcome Mawdesley to Rufford Road 2pm start.
Back at Rufford Road with an umpire wearing hat and gloves due to the cold New Victoria 2nd X1 beat Chorley St James by 27 runs. Batting first New Vic started well with Martin Doran (18) and Andy Schofield (19) putting a partnership together. M.Mitchell (5-29) knocked over the middle over before Under 18 players Andy Sheil (16) and A.Rigby (9*) put together a match winning partnership. New Victoria were eventually bowled out for 86. Chorley St James lost early wickets but C.Ainscough (25) stuck around as wickets fell at the other end. A catch on the run from Peter Hames (yes you did read it correct the catch was taken while running!) and a catch behind by Jordan Hall kept New Victoria in control. Wickets from Martin Doran (4-14), Keith Pacey (3-26) and Andy Sheil (3-4) meant that Chorley St James were all out for 59. This Saturday the 2nds travel to Bretherton.
